Typewriter Upgrade - 2026

A rare non-typed update from Tea.

Let’s see how much of a difference a tool can make. Will it improve my writing? No, nothing could do that. Could it improve your reading experience? Let us gaze upon some examples.

Here is the page from BellStar Chapter 1.1 from the first typewriter:

Then I received another typewriter that is the same model as the one I already had, but it was more carefully maintained prior to me using it. Still has a few quirks, but mostly just paper feeding and the Y and Z keys being swapped. Also, it has German letters. Mechanically, they are supposed to be the same.

Wow! Look at the difference. My aged eyes prefer reading the monospaced typewriter picture than I do the clean semi-serif font that Substact defaults to.

One of the weird byproducts of having such a better strike and the ribbon being advanced easier means the type is so clean and straight (even if the page is off in this example) that the scanner I use (ScanSnap ix500) reads it as black and white if I use a black pen to mark things. That wasn’t possible with the first typewriter.

Future posts should be at least this clear. I also found a old, barely used electric typewriter in my office no one will object to me using, so that might be the pinch hitter if something truly weird or calamitous happens.
